Batteries are nasty.  They are heavy and they are filled with acid that will mess up just about anything it comes in contact with.  As mentioned, the system uses four L16 batteries, together weighing 500 pounds.  That is quite a bit, particularly when you take into account the the motion of the vehicle.

For containment, the batteries are mounted in heavy plastic enclosures manufactured by Ardemco.  Each box, Ardemco model # 02602, houses two batteries.  The boxes are mounted to the extreme rear of the equipment compartment.

The base of the boxes sit in an aluminum angle frame.  Behind the boxes ( toward the front of the vehicle ) is a space of about eight inches that holds a variety of components including the main circuit breaker, Link 10, and various plumbing and wiring.  A T-shaped frame of 1 1/2" steel tubing holds the boxes in their position.  Another piece of steel goes across the top of the boxes to prevent them from lifting out of their base.  The photos below show the details of this installation
